Rose Marie Nathan (nee LaMountain), 95, longtime resident of West Springfield, MA, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2023, at Mercy Medical Center, Springfield, MA, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Springfield, MA on December 4, 1927, daughter of the late Noah Z. and Katherine (Mullin) LaMountain (of Springfield). A graduate of Sacred Heart High School (’45) and Our Lady of the Elms College (B.A. ’49, MLT; M.Ed. ’68), she began her lifelong work as a medical laboratory technician at Westover Airbase Hospital (Chicopee, MA), but spent much of her career at, and retired from, Western Mass. State Hospital in Westfield, MA. After retiring in 1990, she and her late husband of 58 years, Charles R. Nathan Sr., traveled extensively to Europe and the Holy Lands. Rose Marie was a volunteer at Springfield Municipal Hospital and a Eucharistic Minister at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield. A devout catholic, she was also a very active member of the Dominican Laity, serving as a Third Order Prioress. In her spare time she enjoyed cooking, needlepoint/crewel, and watching her beloved Boston Celtics. She was predeceased by her husband Charles, her son David Joseph Nathan and brother Francis J. LaMountain. Rose Marie is survived by her four sons, Charles R. Nathan Jr. (of W. Spfld), John F. (and Ann Marie) Nathan (of Pembroke, MA), Stephen A. (and Mary) Nathan (of Vernon, CT), and Donald E. Nathan (of W. Spfld). She also leaves four grandchildren, Michael Nathan, John Patrick Nathan, Robert T. Nathan, and Kathryn M. (and Tyler) Sparks. Rose Marie also leaves her niece Moira (nee LaMountain) Smotherman and nephews Brad LaMountain, R. Thomas Nathan Jr., James Nathan, Paul Nathan and John M. Nathan. Rose Marie also leaves, in Western Mass and across the country, many extended family members and countless friends, whose support and love she cherished. The family expresses their sincerest gratitude to all the staff at Mercy Medical Center, Springfield, MA for their tireless and generous care of Rose Marie.
Calling hours will be Thursday June 15, 2023 from 4-7PM at Toomey-O'Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St., W. Spfld. The funeral will be Friday June 16, 2023 starting at 9:30AM from the funeral home followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine St., W. Spfld.; burial will follow at the Massachusetts Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Agawam, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dominican Nuns at the Dominican Monastery of the Mother of God, 1430 Riverdale St., W. Spfld.
