Sheila R. (Marceau) Marceau

d. December 13, 2014

West Springfield - Sheila Ruth-Anne (Marci, Pinky) Marceau, 80, was safely called home on Dec. 13, surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the late Leo Buddy Marceau and Ruth Safford Marceau. Born, raised and educated in Springfield, she graduated in 1953 from Springfield Technical and continued her education becoming an L.P.N in 1955 from the former Westfield State Sanatorium, and an RNfrom STCC in 1979, receiving the first Elizabeth OLeary Award for Excellence in Nursing. She retired from Providence Hospital in 1992, as an emergency room nurse. Her father was the first outdoor writer and editor for the Springfield Newspaper. For years, Marci and her Dad collaborated on many newspaper and magazine articles. They were the first father and daughter to be recognized as a writing team by The Outdoor Writers Association of America. She loved traveling, whether by car, RV, plane or train to each and every state in the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii. Her greatest trip of all was an African Safari. Her love of animals included Boston Terriers, Mindy and Mandy, and cats Charlie Brown, Raini and Boots. She had a great love and fascination for lighthouses. She felt her greatest achievement was being a 22 year breast cancer survivor. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved friends, Joseph and Claire (Dolly) Demers of West Springfield, a brother-in-law Len Gilmore and nephew Sean MacClough, both of Arizona. She is survived by her adopted daughters Ellen Galway and her husband Shaun, Sheila Innes and Bobbie Demers. She leaves her grandchildren Butch Marquis and his wife Michelle, Nicole Roth and her husband Scott, Katie Galway and her fianc Tarny Joyal, and Jaed and Taylor Demers, her great-grandchildren, Ariel Hamby and husband Blake, Bridgette and Veronica, Kaila and Corryn, TJ and Lexi. The aforementioned were the light of her life and reason for living. They were the family she never had and had always said how grateful she was to have adopted and been adopted by them. She also leaves a sister, Leah Gilmore and nieces Colleen Oliver and Seanna Caddell and her husband Frank, great-nieces and nephews, Amanda, Michael, Jennifer and Justin all of Arizona. The family would like to thank the staff at Wingate of West Springfield for the wonderful love and care she received there. She made many new friends with the staff and residents. They would also like to thank Western Mass Hospice for their support. There will be a Funeral Home Service, Saturday, 11AM at the TOOMEY-OBRIEN Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St., W. Spfld. A calling hour will precede the service from 10-11AM. Burial will be in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made in her name to Rays of Hope for Breast Cancer or The Wounded Warrior Project.
