Obituary
Sophia M (Paspatis) DeRaleau, 90, passed away Sunday June 13, 2021. Born in Springfield, October 12, 1930, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Tessie (Neffsky) Paspatis. She was a graduate of Springfield Technical High School. She met her husband Arthur Robert DeRaleau while roller skating at Babb’s Beach Roller Rink and were married for 60 years before his passing in 2012. They moved to West Springfield where she was a homemaker while her children were growing up. The fun mom, she always welcomed her children’s friends into the home. Sophia was active in scouting for years. Den mother to many boys, she was chosen to receive the prestigious Silver Beaver Award which is awarded for distinguished service to young people, within a BSA local council, to those who have made a positive impact on the lives of youth. After her family was grown she continued to share her love for children as a volunteer and substitute teacher’s aide in the West Springfield and Westfield schools. She enjoyed gardening and quietly watching the birds in her yard. Sophia is survived and will be greatly missed by her beloved children, Michael and his wife Carmen of Yarmouth, MA., Marie A. Bovat and her husband Steven of Westfield and Nicholas E. and his wife Barbie of Nashua, NH., her beloved sister, Coral A. Murphy of Yarmouth, MA., her beloved grandchildren, Naomi, Samuel and Elijah, her cousin, Betty St. Pierre of Ludlow and in laws, Claire Tatro, Helen Ensign, and Edward DeRaleau and his wife Lydia as well as many nephews and nieces. Honoring her wishes, there are no calling hours or services and the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Because of her love for animals memorial donations may be made to the Westfield Homeless Cat Shelter or Dakin Animal Shelter.
