Obituary
William Ahern died February 2, 2020 at the age of 96 at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke after a brief stay. He was born April 7, 1923, the eldest of eight children of Bridget (Donovan) and William Ahern, both who had immigrated from Ireland. He resided in West Springfield for 57 years before enjoying some well-deserved retirement years at Providence Place. Bill graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1941 and held degrees from the University of Denver, Columbia University, the University of Hartford and Clarkson College. He served his country from 1943 to 1946 in the US Army, European Theater, 1476 Maintenance Company. He was selected to participate in the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) based upon on his academic potential. This earned him the unique technician rank and the opportunity to become an officer. With GI bill benefits, he enrolled at the University of Denver and began a series of education and work experiences from the National Park Service in Appomattox to Hamilton Standard as a tech writer. His main career was devoted to teaching in several western Massachusetts high schools retiring after a long stay at Longmeadow High School. He was pre-deceased by his first wife Evelyn (Gloster) and his second wife, Kathleen Wallace. He is survived by his daughters from Evelyn, Mary Harman (Matthew), Anne Fuller (Tom), Jane Simpson (Tom) and Bridget Ahern (David Shirley). He is also survived by his stepson, John Wallace and grandchildren Daniel and Michael Simpson, Mark Fuller, and Ava and Liam Wallace. He leaves a brother, Harold Ahern (Lynne) and a sister Teresa Brown and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers John, James and Robert and sisters Mary Orwat and Elizabeth LaVoice. His life will be celebrated at St. Thomas Church in West Springfield, MA on Saturday, February 8th at 11 am. The Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Sisters of Providence, Providence Place, 5 Gamelin Street, Holyoke, MA 01040 where he made many new friends and thoroughly enjoyed the last several years of his life or Sisters of St. Joseph, 577 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
