Fred Bodzioch Jr., 75, of West Springfield, passed away Wednesday, April 29, peacefully in his sleep while under the watch and care of his loving family and the dedicated staff at Mercy Hospital. He was born June 22, 1944 to the late Fred (Sr.) and Jane Bodzioch (Zielinski) in Springfield, and raised in Chicopee. In 1970, Fred moved to West Springfield after joining the Police Department the prior year. During his distinguished 39-year career with WSPD Fred rose through the ranks – from walking a beat in the Merrick neighborhood on the dreaded “dog watch” overnight shift to landing a spot on the Special Response Team, an elite unit that is deployed in crisis situations – ultimately retiring in 2008 while holding the coveted Badge #1 emblematic of the officer with the most seniority. For 12 years following his retirement, Fred served as a Sergeant for the Security Unit of the Eastern States Exposition. He was a graduate of Chicopee High School, a certified Emergency Medical Technician, and also held degrees from Holyoke Community College and Western New England University in Criminal Justice. Fred was an avid outdoorsman and an expert marksman, having honed his shooting skills with the Police Dept., and the Army National Guard during his 13 years of service. He was active in the community including Pioneer Valley Sportsman’s Club member, West Springfield Elks Lodge Exalted Ruler, and Town of West Springfield Little League Umpire Director. He will be remembered for his infectious grin, never-ending stories, and his sense of humor most prominently on display during Halloween when he loved to play pranks on and scare neighborhood kids and parents! In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his brother Ronnie and wife Donna. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Toni of 52 years, his ‘partner in crime’ who long affectionately referred to him as her “Deputy Dog”. Fred also leaves his daughter Karen, son Mark, and daughter Tina and husband Michael, and grandchildren Austin, Joseph, Sierra and Dylan.
