Obituary

Joy Elizabeth Hannon (Smith), 79, of Southwick, MA passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at Heritage Hall in Agawam, MA after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.  She was the beloved wife of Harold Hannon for 25 years and for over 28 years with the late Ritchie Smith, who passed away in 1990 and with whom she shared her children. Born in Springfield, MA on November 19, 1940, Joy was the daughter of the late Henry and Argia (Masi) Montagna. A resident of Agawam for the majority of her life, she and Harold moved to Southwick in 2015.  Joy worked at MassMutual for many years retiring in 1999. Joy loved her family and friends and loved spending time with them.  She was a wonderful and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and friend.  She enjoyed reading, playing cards, particularly cribbage, and grabbing coffee with friends.  Earlier in her life, she loved camping and enjoyed countless outings with family and friends.  She enjoyed traveling and spent many summers creating wonderful family memories vacationing at Days Cottages on Cape Cod.  She was a long standing and devout member of the former Saint Anthony’s of Padua church in Agawam.  Later in life, Joy and Harold enjoyed spending the winter months at their home in Venice, FL. In addition to her husband, Joy is survived by a son, David Smith, and his wife Jo-Ellen of Dover, NH; a son Scott Smith, and his wife Michelle of New Boston, NH; a daughter, Ellen Bedard (Smith), and her husband David of Bonita Springs, FL; and a sister Dorothy Murphy, and her husband James of Orleans, MA.  Joy was also the proud grandmother of Gregory, Matthew, Emett, Nicholas, Abigail, Olivia, Jacob and Lily and great grandmother to Rocco.  She also enjoyed spending time with Harold’s six children and their families. Those fortunate enough to know Joy agree that she was one of the nicest people you could ever meet.  She will be sorely missed by all, but never forgotten. In light of the Covid pandemic, services are being postponed to a later date.  When it is safe again for all to gather, we will come together to share stories, memories, laugh and celebrate the wonderful life of Joy Smith Hannon. The Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
