Kevin Joseph Claffey, 67, of West Springfield died on Sunday, June 19 after a courageous five-year battle with cancer.  Kevin grew up in Springfield and was a graduate of Cathedral High School, Springfield Technical Community College, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Western New England College School of Law.  From childhood, Kevin was involved with the Springfield Newspapers.  He was a paper boy, a circulation assistant, and after college, a reporter for the Westfield Evening News and then the Springfield Union News for twenty-two years.  After law school, he began a second career of twenty-one years as an Assistant Clerk and then as First Assistant Clerk Magistrate in Hampden Superior Court.  Kevin loved newspapers, non-fiction, politics, and watching the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics.  He enjoyed traveling, especially to Maine in the summer and to Quincy to visit his daughter, son-in-law, and first grandchild.  He loved conversation and spending time with friends.  He was a kind, compassionate man with a vivid memory and was a great story teller.  Kevin leaves his wife and best friend of thirty-seven years, Joan (Lynch), daughter, Nora Hurstak of Quincy, MA, son-in-law, Bob Hurstak, and his greatly anticipated and beloved granddaughter, Adeline Hurstak.  He also leaves his siblings Mary Janeczek (Michael), Ann Gervais (Maurice), Ellen Mantolesky (Gary), and Jack Claffey.  He was predeceased by his stepson, Owen Cahillane, and his parents, John and Eileen (Kelly) Claffey.  Kevin also leaves many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law from the Lynch family, as well as nieces, nephews, and friends.  Calling hours will be held this Thursday, June 23 from 4-7 PM at Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St, West Springfield, MA 01089.  The funeral mass will be held on Friday, June 24 at 11 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine St, West Springfield, MA 01089 with burial to follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Springfield.  In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Kevin to support cancer research and patient care at: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284.
