Matthew Maratea Jr., 66, passed away July 15, 2022 in Baystate Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Springfield on June 21, 1956 to the late Matthew and Lena (DiLorenzo) Maratea, Sr. He is predeceased by his brother, Dominic Maratea and sister, Carmella Maratea. Matt was a 1974 graduate of Springfield Technical High School. He played baseball from little league through high school and was a member of the Golden Gloves through his youth. He worked for many years as a service manager and also owned Mr. Whippey Soft Swirl where he was a mentor to many children on his ice cream route. He was a loyal fan of the NY Giants.
His wit and infectious personality left a huge impact on everyone he met. He prided himself in working hard and made everyone feel like family. He brought competition to any dance floor.
He leaves the love of his life, Karen (Premont) Maratea, a proud father of Donald, David, Nicholas and Matthew, and his beloved grandson Logan. His sister Jenny, brother in-law Joseph Premont (Kirstin), Rick Premont (Jill) and sister-in-law, Sherri Kaubris. His nieces and nephews; Gina, Vinnie, Laurie, Lisa, Nick, Georgie, Mico, Brielle, Joseph, Alex, Lindsey and Sammy. Matt also leaves his mother and father in-law Carole and Richard Barnaby. Funeral Services will be held 9:30 AM at TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 WESTFIELD ST., followed by an 11 AM Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held TUESDAY 11 AM in St. Thomas Church, 47 Pine St., W. Splfd. Calling Hours will be held MONDAY from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the funeral home.
