Nancy Harris (Hansmann) Steffens passed away on Thursday February 6, 2020 at home. Nancy was born on May 28, 1928 in Albany, NY, the second daughter of Sydney and Helena (Lane) Harris of Birmingham, England. Her childhood was spent in Albany. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University and master’s degrees from The State University of New York and Westfield State College. When her four sons had reached school age, she returned to teaching in the West Springfield school system for several years before a long tenure as a guidance counselor at West Springfield Junior High School. She loved her job, she loved her fellow teachers and administrators, and she loved her students. Upon retirement, she traveled with her husband and spent time between West Springfield and Mesa, AZ before permanently settling again in her home of 55 years near Mittineague Park. She is predeceased by her sister Kathleen Conway, her husband Lester Steffens, and her eldest son James Hansmann. Nancy is survived by sons David (San Francisco), Robert (Southwick), and Scott (West Springfield) Hansmann, her grandchildren Karen Hansmann (Chicopee), Joanne Charland (West Springfield), Nicholas and Isabel Hansmann (East Longmeadow), and Alexander Hansmann (San Francisco), her great-grandsons Rudy and Vincent Charland, as well as her nieces Leslie (Marietta, NY) and Tracey (Vilas, NC) Conway. As a teacher and counselor, Nancy touched many lives and was blessed by so many who enriched her life. She will be dearly missed. Friends, former co-workers, and former students are invited to bring their fond memories and join with her family to celebrate Nancy’s life at Toomey O’Brien Funeral Home,1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield on Thursday February 20, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
