Rebecca Baker

January 6, 1940 ~ March 28, 2020 (age 80)

Rebecca (Ashenhurst) Baker of West Springfield, MA, “Ruby”, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2020 at home surrounded by her loving family.  She was born in Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland, and was the daughter of the late William and Annie (Devane) Ashenhurst. She attended schools in Co. Tyrone; and later lived and worked in the Clyde Valley in Scotland for a number of years.  She came to New Haven, Connecticut, in 1966 and soon after met and later married the love of her life, Padraig Baker, in 1968. Ruby and Padraig settled in West Springfield, MA in 1968, where she was a dedicated homemaker raising her children. Her family, her home, and her friends were always the most important things throughout her life.  Ruby enjoyed all things “Irish” - listening to Irish music, visiting her friends and family in Ireland, dancing at the John Boyle O’Reilly Club, and making her famous corned beef and cabbage dinners.  She had many fond memories of being named the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Queen for New Haven in 1967.  She had a wonderful sense of humor and a laugh that could get everyone else around her laughing.

Along with her husband, Padraig, she is survived by her devoted daughter, Rosemary Baker of West Springfield, MA and her son Patrick Baker and his wife Kelly of Westfield, MA. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Ashlie, Devin and Hannah Baker. Ruby is also survived by her sister, Grace Ashenhurst of Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone. Besides her parents, Ruby was predeceased by her sister, Frances Morris, and her brother-in-law, Jim Morris, both of Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone.   The Baker family would like to extend a special thank you to the West Springfield Fire Department and the Doctors/Nurses at Baystate Medical Center. Due to the CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, a private FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home in West Springfield, MA. A CELEBRATION OF RUBY’S LIFE will be held at a later date. Donations in Ruby’s memory may be made to Dakin Humane Society, Box 6307, Springfield, MA 01101 or to Baystate VNA at 30 Capital Drive, West Springfield, MA 01089.
