Robert Emile Grandpré, 92, passed away peacefully at home in the afternoon on February 5, 2021 surrounded by loving family and caregivers. He was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts on April 29, 1928 the middle son of Joseph Arthur Grandpré and Esther Angeline (Villeneuve) Grandpré. Robert is preceded in death by the love of his life Pauline (Donaghue) Grandpré who passed in 2016 after 63 years of marriage. He is also predeceased by his parents, and his brothers Raoul and Roland. He is survived by his four children and their spouses Ellen and Jim Badger, James and Justine Grandpré, Mary and Steven Link, Katie and Ralph Davis, 11 grandchildren Brendon, Mae, Robert, Samantha, Luke, Jake, Eric, Kayla, Rachel, Michael and Allison, 5 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews and friends. He also leaves behind sister in laws, Margaret Donaghue and Jacqueline Grandpré.
Robert earned his BS in Chemistry from Northeastern University. He served his country at the tail end of WWII and subsequently in the chemical corps during the Korean War. He worked as a research chemist for Shawinagin Chemical Company and later for Monsanto in Springfield MA. Robert was a popular square dance caller for several local clubs including “Sets in Orbit” and “Men and Maids” and taught lessons in the family basement. He earned his MBA from American International College and worked as a financial planner and insurance agent for Connecticut General and Cigna Insurance companies where he received many awards for outstanding service. Volunteer work in the community included board work for Brightside in West Springfield Massachusetts, president of the Shorewood Condo Association in Cape Canaveral Florida and Meals on Wheels.
Robert enjoyed numerous activities and interests throughout his life including running marathons, skiing, hunting, fishing, boating, camping, hiking, traveling, jazz music, card playing and his passion golf. He will be fondly remembered by family and friends for his great sense of humor, kindness, generosity, positive attitude and work ethic. He was a man who had a love of God, wife and family. In retirement, Robert and Pauline split their time in Cape Canaveral Florida where they could enjoy the beach, golfing, and watching rocket launches.
In the last years of life, Robert was cared for by family and special care givers Indira Apio and Nana Owusu whom we thank for their kindness, patience and excellent care and Mercy Adult Day Health Program in Westfield MA. In the past few months, Baystate Hospice has been invaluable for their compassionate care and expertise for which our family is grateful.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 10th at Saint Thomas Catholic Church, 47 Pine Street, West Springfield Massachusetts at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. Due to Covid concerns Calling Hours will be held only for immediate family members at Toomey and O’Brien Funeral Home. A celebration of Robert’s life will take place in the summer or fall post Covid for family and friends.
