Walter Witaszek, age 98, of West Springfield passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at The Atrium in Agawam. He was born in Holyoke on February 26, 1924 to the late Nellie Jagnic. Walter was raised in Springfield attending Trade High School, where he played football as a half-back. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was assigned the position of Coxswain. He proudly served with distinction in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 bronze stars and the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 4 bronze stars. Walter then began his career as a sheet metal fabricator with Standard Electric Time where he was instrumental in forming a union. Walter married the love of his life, Colleen Murphy in 1946 and enjoyed 69 years of marriage until her passing in 2015. To cherish his memory, Walter leaves his daughters; Joyce (Normand) Boutin of Longmeadow, Nancy (David) Graham, Susan (Jeffrey) Martini, and Wendy (Michael) Smith of West Springfield. He also leaves his nephew, Fran Curnow of Feeding Hills, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his mother and three sisters. Walter will be remembered as a very handy person who would give freely of his time and expertise to family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at The Atrium for their compassionate care. Walter will be laid to rest at the MA Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. All services are private.
